The Member-First Decision Filter

For all the talk of being 'member-first', very few organisations have a simple way of applying that principle to everyday decisions.

Membership businesses rarely lose members because of one catastrophic mistake. They lose them through hundreds of small decisions that gradually erode member trust, value and confidence over time.

Retention is the outcome of thousands of member-first decisions.

Over time, I've found that many of the biggest choices in membership businesses come down to a single tension: are we optimising for today's metric, or for the member's experience over the long term?

That's why I've created The Member-First Decision Filter - the first practical framework from The Member-First Method. It's a simple tool designed to help organisations pause, challenge assumptions and make choices that strengthen member relationships over time.

It should help every internal team, not just Member Experience, make decisions that optimise for retention. Whether you're working in membership marketing, sales, events, finance, product or operations, it asks one deceptively simple question:

Are we optimising for the number today, or for the members experience over the next three years?

"The number" in this case is whatever's being measured in the moment - new joiners, event attendance, open rates, payments received or enquiry closure speed. Wanting the number isn't wrong. The question is whether achieving it today comes at the expense of the overall member experience and, ultimately, long-term retention.

Why this matters

Retention isn't won at the point of renewal, but is earned through the cumulative effect of decisions made every day across your organisation.

Consequently, what is genuinely best for members is almost always best for the membership business too. Members notice when decisions are made in their interests. They stay longer, trust more deeply and are more likely to refer others like them.

This framework exists to help organisations make those decisions consistently - shifting to become more authentically aligned with a retention-led model.

I hope you find it useful. If you share it with your team or use it to shape a decision, I'd love to hear how it changes the conversation.
